About the center / History

The history of the Scientific Information Centre and Main Library of Transport goes back to 1919. In 1919, in Warsaw, the Ministry of Railways established a scientific library collecting both Polish and foreign literature concerning legal, economic and technical aspects of railways. Since 1926 when the Polish State Railways were established, then the network of professional libraries was created encompassing all units of the Polish State Railways.

In 1932 the Ministry of Transport was established in place of the Ministry of Railways. Since then the range and functions of the Main Library of Transport (GBK) have been changed. The library became a centre of professional literature concerning rail, road, water and air transport. In 1935 the library began publication of the following journals: "Bulletins" (documentary review articles from foreign magazines), the monthly „List of the most importants accessions GBK" and the annual "List of Magazines - Acquired as Subscriptions and Exchange of Gifts".

Library activities ceased during the war until 1945. In enne 1945 Library activity was resumed. In 1950 the network of professional libraries was established encompassing all department units, which in 1961 was transformed into a network of economic and technical information centres. The network represents branch, local and institutional centres of information and the Departament Centre of Scientific, Technical and Economic Inforamtion (ROI) of the Ministry of Transport and Maritime Economy.
